In July 2022, just a month before Jaimie Branch's death shook the world, the trumpeter and composer was at International Anthem Studios in Chicago putting the finishing touches on an album.
It was a series of musical pieces she had composed and then recorded with her flagship ensemble Fly or Die during a residency at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, Nebraska. In her wake, the album was nearly finished, with only the mixing, final tracks and artwork missing. In the months that followed, her family (led by her sister Kate Branch), her band (Jason Ajemian, Lester St. Louis, and Chad Taylor), and her collaborators at IARC teamed up to collect memories, texts, emails, photos, artwork, and fragments of Jaimie to illuminate the path forward. The goal was always to do what Jaimie would have done. "Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war))" is Jaimie's final album with her Fly or Die quartet, wrapped in stunning artwork by John Herndon, Damon Locks and Branch himself.
