The new album by DAVID GILMOUR will be released in time for his 60th birthday on March 3.
DAVID GILMOUR has made himself extremely rare as a solo artist in his long career, which has largely been dominated by Pink Floyd. "On An Island" is only his third solo album. The first two, "DAVID GILMOUR" (1978) and "About Face" (1984), date back more than two decades, and Pink Floyd's last studio album, the multi-platinum bestseller "The Division Bell" (1994), now has a dozen years under its belt. Despite their sensational reunion on the occasion of the Live8 concert, a permanent reunion of Pink Floyd is written in the stars. The new studio album by DAVID GILMOUR should be all the more welcome among fans.
From the first notes of the sound collage that opens "On An Island", one has the feeling of a very special musical experience that not only stands up to any comparison with the best works of Pink Floyd, but once again confirms the class of lead guitarist and singer DAVID GILMOUR as a solo artist. Here he reveals his personal musical visions and a range of stylistic elements from folk, jazz, rock and orchestral passages, with his lyrical guitar playing and distinctive voice running like a thread through the album.
With the participation of the renowned Polish composer Zbigniew Preisner, who is responsible for the orchestral work, as well as the brilliant production (assisted by Phil Manzanera, once with Roxy Music), the very foundation of the album is a guarantee of virtuosity. Added to this are prominent guest musicians such as David Crosby and Graham Nash (harmony vocals), Robert Wyatt (cornet), Georgie Fame (Hammond), Jools Holland (piano), Caroline Dale (cello) and Alasdair Molloy (glass harmonica). Richard Wright (Hammond organ) of Pink Floyd also pays his respects and one of the very big surprises is the participation of guitarist Rado "Bob" Klose, who was part of the earliest lineup of Pink Floyd. The soul of the album is, of course, the voice and the magnificent guitar work of DAVID GILMOUR, who, however, has taken care that the album never sounds too bombastic, but primarily forms a very contemplative work, to which the lyrics also make a decisive contribution.
