Digital Underground were founded in Oakland, California in 1987 and led by Greg "Shock G" Jacobs (aka "Humpty Hump"). They were heavily influenced by 70s funk, and so a lot of samples from this period have been "utilized" here.

Sex Packets, the group's debut, was released in the spring of 1990. The album starts with The Humpty Dance, probably the band's most famous song, which hit like a bomb at the time - it reached number 11 in the US Billboard Hot 100 and also climbed to the top of the Billboard Rap Single Charts and, on top of that, caused a considerable stir on MTV within a very short time with its ingenious bass line and a funny video. It is an extraordinarily successful debut album and clearly shows hip hop in its "golden age". At the end of the 80s/beginning of the 90s, hip hop was still much more creative, multi-layered and off the beaten pop track. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, it achieved platinum status in the USA and is listed in the book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die".
