Erykah Badu
Mama's Gun
"Mama's Gun" is the second studio album by neo soul singer ERYKAH BADU, released in 2000.
Recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, the album blends funk, soul and jazz styles.
The very intimate and personal album covers topics like insecurity, social problems as well as personal relationships and reached platinum status only two months after its release.
"Mama's Gun" also features guests such as soul singer BETTY WRIGHT and trumpeter Roy Hargrove.
The album includes the single "Bag Lady," which shot to #1 on the R&B charts and into the top ten on the Billboard charts with its colorful, artistic music video.
"Bag Lady" was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance."
And the song "Didn't Cha Know?" as the best R&B song. Rolling Stone magazine applauded her for taking her chances like STEVIE WONDER and NINA SIMONE once did in their prime, adding that BADU "takes her art to a new level.
Entertainment Weekly called the album a "'70s soul homage with live musicians and a smooth-funk sound that would fit on a CTI record."
