Released in 2023, 12 is an intimate, minimalist masterpiece born from Sakamoto’s personal battles with illness. This ambient album, recorded during his recovery, reflects a meditative exploration of life, mortality, and solitude. Each track is built around delicate piano compositions and gentle electronic textures, creating an atmosphere of introspection and quiet resilience.

Speaking about the album, Ryhichi Sakamoto said: "After finally 'coming home' to my new temporary accommodation following a major operation, I picked up the synthesizer. I had no intention of composing anything; I just wanted to be flooded with sounds. I will probably continue to keep this kind of 'diary'".
