In 2017, Midnight Oil returned to the spotlight after a long break. After several concerts around the world, they went back into the studio, recorded 20 songs. Seven of them ended up on the album "The Makarrata Project", with which the band ended their 18-year release hiatus in 2020. The album reached number one in the charts in their native Australia. Unfortunately, at the same time the band had to say goodbye to their bassist Bones Hillman, who died shortly after the release.
"Resist" will now be released in 2022, the follow-up that gathers twelve more songs from the joint sessions with Bones. It is the thirteenth studio album of Midnight Oil, which, like its predecessor, was produced by Warne Livesey.
In the wake of the release, the band also announced their final Australian and New Zealand tour for 2022. Guitarist Jim Moginie commented, "We've been playing intensely physical gigs since our humble beginnings in 1977, and we never want to take even the slightest risk of jeopardizing that."
At the same time, Midnight Oil emphasized that this does not mean the dissolution of the band. Instead, the members would pursue their own projects in the future and it was not excluded that they would record music together again.
They already revealed what "Resist" sounds like in October 2021 with the single "Rising Seas", in which they address the climate crisis in their usual uncompromising way.
