Five years after the release of their eponymous debut album, London band Hot Border Special are back with their second album "Are You Ready?".
This time studio engineer Malcolm Catto (The Heliocentrics / Mulatu Astake / Gaslamp Killer / Hannah Williams) took care of the production in his own Quartermass Sound Studio in London and drove the band to an energetic, fresh performance. Hot Border Special have never been afraid to take risks. Just take "Woo!", a funk / rock / Latin killer as the album's opener, or the crime-soundtrack-like "Who Is Tony Soap?". From the fast-paced groove, Hot Border Special effortlessly swing into the mellow sound of "Good Egg Bad Egg" or the Sly Stone-inspired "The Martha Strut". They even venture into a Bollywood classic ("Sholay") and the mighty "Mandrill" by Mandrill.
"Are You Ready?" reflects the musical virtuosity and class of a Hot Border Special love concert. After all, the individual band members otherwise play in groups such as the Heliocentrics, The Quantic Soul Orchestra, The Mighty Mocambos, Noisettes & JetTricks - to name but a few. The drums and percussion of Dan Hale and Paul Elliott are supported by Jamie Lawrence's bass and Dan Smith's trenchant rock guitar, while James Beckett lays down psychedelic keyboards.
