A rare glimpse into the creative process behind one of hip-hop’s most revered albums, "Madvillainy Demos" presents early versions of MF DOOM and Madlib’s groundbreaking work. Lo-fi, unfinished, and bursting with raw energy, these demos reveal the duo's magic as they shaped the sound of underground rap for a new generation.

In 2002, demos of "Madvillainy" were leaked on the internet. The tracks contained early vocal recordings by MF DOOM, which were recorded in Los Angeles at Madlib's Bomb Shelter studio and quickly mixed.

Although the demos were unfinished, it was immediately clear to fans that this was a special hip-hop album. One that was different from all the others. DOOM re-recorded the vocals - on the track "Rhinestone Cowboy" he alludes to the leak - and Madlib added new beats and changed the order. Leaks could kill an album's momentum in the early 2000s, but not here. The demos only whetted the fans' appetite. When "Madvillainy" came out in 2004, it was, according to Pitchfork, "one of the most anticipated releases in the history of underground rap".

20 years later, "Madvillainy" is considered one of the best hip-hop albums of all time. - available on vinyl for the first time in 2024 - vinyl sleeve and insert feature newly released archive photos by Eric Coleman (who photographed the original cover of Madvillainy). - Mastered by Dave Cooley, who also mastered Madvillainy.
