"Milestones" was recorded on April 2 and 3, 1958. "My idea," Miles Davis wrote in his autobiography, "was to continue with this sextet what we had already started with Trane, Red, Paul and myself; only I wanted to add Cannonball Adderley's blues voice and thereby expand the whole thing. I could imagine Cannonball's bluesy alto sax against Trane's harmonic, chordal playing, his freer way of improvising, creating a whole new feel, a new sound."
