Miles Davis Volume 1 collects the trumpeter's early 1950s sessions for Blue Note, a vital document of his journey from bebop towards the hard bop sound he would help define. Featuring heavyweight sidemen including J.J. Johnson, Jackie McLean and Art Blakey, these recordings show Davis developing the lyrical, economical voice that made him a legend. The playing is tight and searching, with the warm, intimate sound Blue Note became famous for. For jazz collectors, this is a key piece of the Miles story and a superb companion to his later Prestige and Columbia classics.
