Usually ready in 2 hoursOmara Portuondo is probably the most famous singer in Cuba. Omara already had a successful career as a singer and dancer in Cuba when she was "discovered" by Ry Cooder and Nick Gold and eventually achieved international fame as the only female singer on the album "Buena Vista Social Club".
After recording albums with other Buena Vista Social Club artists, Rubén González and Ibrahim Ferrer, World Circuit returned to the EGREM studios in Havana to record "Omara". The result is an album reminiscent of the heyday of big bands. Since then, Omara Portuondo has toured all over the world and, at the age of 88, is currently on a major farewell tour.
"Buena Vista Social Club presents ... Omara Portuondo" deals with unrequited love. Her sonorous and expressive voice was staged by the Cuban arranger Demetrio Muñiz (director of Havana's famous Tropicana cabaret), combined with a rich and varied accompaniment to the recordings. Lush string sections, Compay Segundo's clarinet group, traditional septeto music, jazz big band style of the 50s and a string quartet as well as other unusual combinations alternate. A sound that could only be made in Cuba.
