Seun Kuti & Egypt 80
Night Dreamer Direct to Disc Sessions
Seun Kuti, the youngest son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti and leader of his father's Egypt 80 band, entered Artone Studio in Haarlem, Holland earlier this year to record a direct-to-disc session in a single take
This session, the first to be released on the Night Dreamer label, brought together some of the best Afrobeat musicians in the world, many of whom had their first experience with Fela himself. Seun, who inherited both his father's musicality and political activism, was only fourteen when his father died, and has been playing in the band for over twenty years, first as a vocalist and then as a saxophonist in the tradition of his father
For the Night Dreamer session, the band took a day to get used to the recording process, check the volume and make some test cuts, with Seun as the central figure, orchestrating the band with the confidence of his father. Without the security of multiple takes, on the second day Seun and Egypt 80 recorded all four tracks (two per side) in a single take without rehearsal, improvising with all the concentration and relaxation of his music.
