The Skatalites
Essential Artist Collection
n the early 1960s, the ska sound exploded onto the Jamaican musical landscape. The driving, dynamic sound was carried by arguably the greatest group of musicians to ever perform and record on the island.
Led by legendary saxophonist Tommy McCook, the Skatalites included a veritable who's who of Kingston artists, including trombonist Don Drummond, tenor saxophonist Roland Alphonso, drummer Lloyd Knibb and keyboard prodigy Jackie Mittoo. After their formation in the summer of 1964, this powerhouse instrumental combo dominated the island's music industry for 18 glorious months. Most of their work was produced by famed Treasure Isle Records boss Arthur "Duke" Reid.
Highlights from their work for the famed producer are presented on the "Essential Artist Collection," released as both a 2LP vinyl set and a double CD collection. Both offer the best introduction yet to the music of the incredible, versatile and highly influential Skatalites.
